Where is the gay?
Mar. 12th, 2010 04:42 amThere are lesbians everywhere--lesbian couples a few times on House, reoccurring lesbian character on White Collar; bisexual main characters having on screen kisses with other girls on Star Trek DS9, Heroes, Bones, Firefly, House, and Buffy; lesbian main characters getting love scenes in FlashForward. Heck, even Lana Lang got a lesbian kiss.
Meanwhile, the only two of my shows to have shown serious, positive examples of gay relationships are Bones and Supernatural, both as guest characters, and on Bones one half of the couple is dead. Supernatural not only gave us a sweet and interesting gay couple, but we also got a gay-ish kiss with a demon. I'm not sure how I feel about that, though, because the demon is doing it knowing the man is appalled by it.
Like, don't get me wrong, I'm totally glad that homosexual characters/couples are getting screen time at all. But it's disappointing to me that lesbians are somehow safer or less offensive, since men can objectify them or something.
It's also disappointing that a lot of the same shows that show lesbian couples in a positive light seem to view gay couples with a homophobic lense. House does pretty well with it. Sure House says outrageous things about homosexuals...but he says outrageous things about everyone, and he's obviously not homophobic. On the other hand, he literally said that Wilson being with Amber was Wilson dating/having sex with House. They're living together, they *get* each other, the two of them have this amazing love, but we all know it's never going to happen, even though 13 can have all the female lovers she wants.
Bones, one of the most intelligent shows I've ever seen, and my favourite that airs now, did a pretty decent job with the episode with the gay couple, and treated Angela and Roxy's relationship pretty well. Temperance, Angela, and Zach are all open about and okay with homosexuality--but then there's Hodgins and Booth with their irrational homophobia. And I get that is just their character. Still, I would expect better of Hodgins at least. Booth and his Catholicism make sense, but Hodgins is a scientific man, very comfortable with his sexuality, and is very, very liberal. What's that about? And okay, maybe I'm just a Hodgins/Vincent Nigel-Murray shipper, but whatever. They could do experiments. All day long. At Hodgins' mansion. I'm actually planning a couple of fics with those two...
Off-topic. The thing is, although I know it isn't going to happen, I still watch these emotionally fraught scenes, hoping against hope--the final scenes of the White Collar finale, the intense moments between House and Wilson, those moments when Hodgins and Vincent Nigel-Murray are giggling at each other, when Dean tells Cas he's going to help relieve him of his virginity...I watch them and trick myself into thinking it's actually going to happen. I am inevitably disappointed.
Back on the topic of Bones fic...I really want to write this au where Hodgins and Vincent Nigel-Murray work at two competing labs and have this professional antagonism going on, trading witty quips whenever they bump into each other at events. And then they end up at the same convention somewhere and stumble upon a murder or something in a different part of the hotel, which makes them targets and they have to try and unravel what's actually going on while dodging assassins. Or something. Does anyone here even watch Bones? Would anyone read that?
